Book nook - Secret Legacy

Despite its often avoided, all-too-real subject of generational abuse and subsequent fallout, Secret Legacy by Carol Albrecht is a truth-packed literature jewel worth reading. Straight-forward examples of how Christian families with conflicting relationships deal with sin, guilt, and shame draw readers into a compelling story of God's grace and healing. Vivid images paint believable characters and events yet spare the reader violent details often found in similarly categorized secular media.

Written from a female vantage point, young and old can stroll through memories of principal character, Kathy, as she pieces together past family secrets, seeking a better understanding of her present while pressing toward an optimistic future. She laughs, cries, and prays while growing up, dating, marrying, and raising her own children with her caring pastor-husband and distant support from extended family.

This reviewer found personal connectedness with the narrative story line, discovering as each new chapter unfolded the same thing that Kathy did: the dark reality of the sinful nature is overcome only by clinging to the Lord's strength. Forgiveness, faith, hope, and joy are driving themes that grew steadily throughout the book's 154 pages until its peaceful resolution. Once finished, this timely paperback isn't one that gets shelved but passed on to a friend—not with the sentiment, "A pleasant read," but rather, "I am better because of it."
