Original sin Bible study

How we understand original sin will affect our understanding of the doctrines of redemption (Christ's work) and conversion (the Holy Spirit's work). These questions are meant to help us reflect further on the connection between original sin and conversion.

Read 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

1. Sanctify means to "make holy" or to "set apart as holy." It is the work which the Holy Spirit does to bring us to faith. Read Ephesians 2:1-5 to see what our original sin makes us like "by nature" so that we need the Holy Spirit to do this work.

2. Conversion means to be "turned around" from unbelief to faith. What expressions in these verses emphasize that conversion is something that is done to us, not by us?

3. Verse 14 tells us that the Holy Spirit has called us to faith through the gospel. We call the gospel the "means of grace." It is the way God puts faith in our hearts. Explain how the gospel assures us that we will "share in the glory of Christ" now on earth . . . in heaven.

4. Why does St. Paul add the encouragement in verse 15 to keep standing firm in Paul's gospel message?

5. Verses 16-17 remind us of the beauty of praying for God's blessing upon fellow believers. Think of someone for whom you can pray these words.

6. Some Christians believe they can make a decision to believe in Jesus. Explain how a bad situation that comes up in life might make that person doubt the validity of his decision.

7. What is the comfort of knowing that is the Holy Spirit—and not any of us—who is completely responsible for bringing us to faith in the work of Jesus?
